Burt Flemming began woodcarving as a hobby in late 1978, whittling on the end of broom handles with his pocket knife. Within three years, he became a member of a local woodcarving club, entering wood sculptures into competition and bringing home blue ribbons and a little extra spending money. During the summer of 1986, he started teaching hand carving classes: first in the Baton Rouge area, and later expanding into New Orleans and Southern Mississippi. Burt taught hand carving at Louisiana State University and at various Baton Rouge area schools.
He is a member of the Arts Council Teaching Team, and has instructed Young Masters™ at BREC, The Book Warehouse, Local Schools, Churches and Summer Camps. His personable demeanor, unique teaching style and methods still cause him to be in high demand. His skills as a carving teacher are phenomenal, since he is able to relate to and instruct both beginning and advanced students, children and retirees. Burt offers a wide variety of subject matter for the “wood-b-carver” to choose from: birds, people, fish, and animals. All carving styles are available: hand carved relief, chip carving, and In-The-Round as well as chainsaw carving (as you can see firsthand during the minutes of his. Through his personable teaching style, Burt is able to make even the most difficult aspects of woodcarving come alive to his students.
It’s been said that Burt’s carvings display a versatility seldom found in one artist – an assertion that’s easily upheld in light of his body of work. Ranging from wild life to people, from two inch hand carved pieces to chainsaw carved thirty foot tall sculptures, Burt does it all. No commission scares him. He approaches his work just like he approaches his life – with level headed optimism and determination.
